High Frequency Words
What is it ?
High frequency words are quite simply those words which occur most frequently in written material, for example, "and", "the", "as" and "it". They are often words that have little meaning on their own, but they do contribute a great deal to the meaning of a sentence.
Why are they important?
Since high frequency words are the words that appear most often in text, children who are able to learn most or all of them will be able to identify multiple portions of text and have a solid foundation already laid out for them in reference to reading. Through learning the most commonly used words, students will be able to take off with basic phonics and reading. They are more likely to become successful, independent readers.
