Why is it important?
Invented spelling creates a sense of "writing" confidence within the student because they are relying on themselves and their knowledge of phonics instruction to spell out a word. Invented spelling is a great indicator of the child's understanding of letter to sound relations and encourages students to use past lessons as a tool for spelling out a word. Invented spelling is proof that the child is not giving up despite not completely knowing how to spell a word; they are trying and using educated guesses.
